The Science and Technology Section The Science and Technology
Section of the South African Embassy in Brussels invites you to the European
Foundation Week, to be held in Brussels from 31 May to 4 June 2010. This is a
week-long event with debates and exhibitions about foundations and how they work
for Europe (see:
http://www.efc.be/AgaConference/Pages/AGAandConference.aspx). The Open Days
component of the programme provides an opportunity for debates on issues, which
impact on global sustainable development, and how they relate to the work of
European foundations.
A seminar, under the
auspices of the European South African Science and Technology Advancement
Programme (http://www.esastap.org.za),
will take place on Monday, the 31st of May 2010 from 14:00 to 17:00 at the
Square Brussels Meeting Centre (http://www.square-brussels.com),
Mont des Arts 22, Brussels 1000 (Metro: Gare Centrale).
The seminar programme will
consist of a series of short, succinct presentations, grouped under the
following themes:
- Flagship national African
research and innovation initiatives - including presentations by the national
science and technology authorities from Egypt, Kenya and South Africa.
- Science and technology to
support Africa's attainment of the Millennium Development Goals - including
presentations on the work of the European Developing Countries Clinical Trials
Partnership and the Technical Centre for Agriculture and Rural Development of
the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States.
- African science and
technology capacity-building initiatives - including presentations on the
Universe Awareness for Young Children programme, which leverages astronomy as
education platform, as well as iconic African frontier research projects such as
the MeerKAT radio telescope, which act as powerful engines for Africa's human
capital development.
There will be ample time for
discussion following these presentations, including with a special round table
of African and European experts to consider opportunities and challenges for
science and technology cooperation between Africa and Europe.
The seminar will be followed
by a reception during which traditional African food and South African wine will
be served. You are also warmly invited to the seminar. For planning purposes,
participation in the seminar should kindly be confirmed to Ms Francoise Dassy at
francoise.dassy@belgacom.net

July 18, 2009, marked
former President, Nelson Mandela’s 91st birthday and also the inaugural
MANDELA DAY. After the success of this first MANDELA DAY in 2009,
the United Nations adopted it as a day for global humanitarian action calling it
Nelson Mandela International Day. MANDELA DAY is about creating a global
movement for good, which recognizes – as Mr Mandela does – that positive change
begins with small, selfless, individual actions. MANDELA DAY serves as a
catalyst for people around the world to realize that each and every one of them
has the ability to change the world through small actions. On July 18,
please, donate at least sixty seven (*67) minutes of your time in service to
your community. (*67 minutes is a symbolic number, representing the
number of years Mr Mandela was actively involved in social activism).
