GENERAL INFO : BANK NOTES

South African bank notes

Persons entering the Republic may import Rand bank notes, in terms of the Exchange Control Regulations, but the amount is restricted to R5 000,00 per person.

South African travellers cheques

Tourists are permitted to import unlimited quantities of travellers cheques denominated in South African Rand.

Foreign currency

Tourists are permitted to import unlimited amounts of foreign currency whether in the form of travellers cheques denominated in a foreign currency or foreign bank notes. It should be noted that large amounts of foreign bank notes being carried by tourists should be declared to customs on their arrival in South Africa to avoid any problems that may arise on their departure from the country.

      Export of currency

Persons travelling in/out of SA are permitted to export a maximum of R5000 in South African bank notes. It should be noted that while tourist may freely export all unused travellers cheques originally imported into South Africa, they are only permitted to export foreign bank notes which were originally imported by them or which represent the proceeds of instruments of exchange (e.g. travellers cheques) exchanged during their visit. In this regard, tourists are advised to retain all foreign exchange receipts in their possession until such time as they have left the country, as it remains the prerogative of customs to call for the production of these receipts at the place of exit from South Africa.
